I'd seen a couple of minutes from this, years ago. I thought, given how highly regarded it is, I'd watch the whole thing.
Turns out that it's laughably hammy, dated shit.
Right, yeah, Miami, neon, the '80s and all that means that it's very, very visually striking. However, all the other stuff one hopes for in a decent film, good acting, coherent editing, a plot that seems to lose years without accounting for them, whilst dragging out more inconsequential moments... It's pretty fucking lame.
The documentary Cocaine Cowboys covers the same area in the same era and is a far better watch.
Al Pacino was 43 when he played Tony Montana, so well-done Tony for making the big leap into a career change in your middle years. The job market can be a bastard when you've reached a certain age.
