Also, isn't 'passed his prime' also grammatically correct? as, surely, your prime is only going to be a fixed period, therefore you approach, experience and pass through it? Although 'passed' would be suggestive of having missed, or not made use of the time when his skills were at their strongest.
Aah well, whatever my prime was, and whatever it was doing, I fear it's framed in the rear-view mirror by now.
